About the Artist

Michelle Grimm is a multi-disciplinary artist and designer currently working with clay as her primary medium. For the few past years, she has been exploring atmospheric firing techniques like raku, horse hair, saggar pit firing, soda firing and wood firing. The dichotomy of modern forms with the often-primitive firing methods results in one-of-a-kind objects of art that invite beauty into the home.

Mainly working in porcelain and stoneware, her ceramics are minimal in form and often left unglazed to allow ash, smoke/carbon, salt or other organic materials from the firing process to add color and texture to the pieces she creates. These organic materials used are often foraged from local beaches, forests and farms. Using these specific firing methods allows for an unpredictable alchemy between earth, artist and fire acting together to create each piece's unique personality. Her work invites us to celebrate the element of chance, accepting and embracing that which we cannot completely control.

Previous to opening her ceramics studio, Michelle worked in the field of commercial interiors and spatial design while maintaining a private ceramics and arts practice. Her design work focused heavily on concept development for art based interior experiences while exploring materiality and how it can be used in different contexts or unique processes to alter its outcome. She enjoyed working on both large and small scale design projects with a wide array of experience that include restaurants, hotel restaurants, bars, retail spaces and retail showrooms along with public space activation strategies.

Michelle founded her ceramic studio in 2021 with the vision to craft one-of-a-kind objects of art and a continuous pursuit of materials interrogation. She is committed to making simple contemporary forms while exploring the conversation between textures and experimenting with new methods of firing and glazing.
